When I let go of everything to ‘rest and trust’, I was hoping that opportunities would come for work I find meaningful. I was hoping to find clarity and direction. Instead I have floundered in confusion and mental anguish, and opportunities have eluded me left and right.
I am reminded now of a point I’ve heard Jordan Peterson make many times. He says that the Israelites were expecting their freedom from the tyranny of Egypt to be wonderful, but were sorely disappointed when they found themselves wandering in the desert, hungry and lost.
‘You may think you want freedom from the tyranny of oppressive systems,’ says JP, ‘but you may not be prepared for the desert. Because what comes after being freed of tyranny isn’t paradise, it’s a wilderness.’
And I have been wandering in this wilderness for what feels like a lifetime.
