We’ve never been able to define consciousness. Maybe it’s not something that can be defined in rational terms or understood cognitively. Maybe AI will give us a unique opportunity to understand consciousness by means of comparison to an intelligence which is superior to ours in every way and yet lacks consciousness. I think of what Carl Jung said about how human beings have never properly understood themselves because they’ve never had an equal species with which to compare themselves. Well, here we are.
